Funding
If you are a Welsh SME (Small to Medium Enterprise), there are government schemes that can help fund a project. These schemes, such as the Technology Exploitation Programme, and SMARTCymru can provide funding towards the cost of the project. Further information can be found at the Welsh Assembly Government website.Knowledge Transfer Partntership
The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is a DTI initiative which aims to help companies access expertise in the UK's 'Knowledge Base', which includes Universities. The KTP works by part funding a project that is of 'strategic importance' to your organisation but for which your company requires additional knowledge and skills. These partnerships are designed to help companies benefit from working with academics in order to improve services, processes or develop new products. Project duration can be any length of time between one and three years. More information about this initiative can be found on the KTPwebsite.PhD CASE Studentships Information
A CASE (Cooperative Awards in Science and Engineering) supports a student to undertake industrially relevant research. The award is in addition to a PhD Research Studentship from the EPSRC (Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council). The PhD is jointly devised and supervised by your organisation and ourselves. The benefits to your organisation include:
- Access to the expertise and facilities in our department.
- An economic way to undertake research to solve problems faced by your organisation.
A PhD student will typically begin their studies in September, however they can start later subject to agreement. A PhD can be converted to a CASE award part way through the work. Further details of a CASE award can be found at the EPSRCwebsite.
Cymru Prosper Wales Information
This scheme aims to encourage small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Wales to employ graduates. To achieve this, the scheme offers a weekly subsidy towards the cost of employing the student for a short term project of about eight to twelve weeks. Typically, the placements start in July, which provides sufficient time for an undergraduate student to complete the work during the summer vacation. Our students have a broad set of skills that make them more attractive to employers. Throughout their course we emphasise project management, group working and communication skills. A number of our students have taken part in this scheme; some examples of jobs include working to setup a Web Café, and trainee software engineer at a local software company.
The benefits to you are that your needs drive the placement. You define the problem that is to be worked on, and select the candidate that will best fit into your organisation. More information about this scheme can be found on the Cymru Prospect Wales website.
