The Role, Functions and Future Potential of Town and Community Councils in Wales.

A Research Study commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government, and undertaken by the Regional Change & Development Research Group, Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences, University of Wales, Aberystwyth.


 Research Stages.

 

The study began in April 2002 and runs for twelve months until the end of March 2003. The research has involved a number of stages focused on different aspects of the work of town and community councils and their engagement with other bodies. These include:

  • a review of existing studies of and sources of information on town and community councils (completed)

  • a questionnaire survey of all town and community councils in Wales to collect factual information about their current activities (completed)

  • a survey of county / county borough councils about their involvement with town and community councils (completed)

  • an examination of the engagement of councils with a range of external bodies through interviews and written correspondence (on-going)

  • an investigation of the operation and opinion of councillors in a number of case study areas (completed)

  • interviews with planning officers, key unitary council officers and representatives of the voluntary sector and the community councils' associations (on-going)

  • a series of public meetings to discuss, among other issues, how town and community councils engage with the public (due to be completed, January 2003)
