  • radionuclides
  • heavy metals
  • atmospheric pollutants with emphasis on ozone
  • endocrine disrupting chemicals
  • dioxin-like compounds
  • pesticides

Aims

To gain a knowledge and understanding of different types of environmental pollution, their impacts on humans and on ecosystems.

Content

The module considers aspects of environmental pollution in terms of the essential chemistry of different pollutants, their behaviour in the environment and adverse effects on the biosphere. Lecture topics include:

  • radionuclides, nuclear waste reprocessing and disposal;
  • heavy metals;
  • atmospheric pollution (photochemical smog, ozone);
