Learning Outcomes

On successfully completing this module:

1. On listening, you will be able to identify the provenance of traditional forms of music and describe the instruments used.

2. You will able to discuss the rhythmic, harmonic, and stylistic features of traditional music and song.

3.You will be able to describe ways in which traditional music and song are transmitted from generation to generation.

4. You will be able to discuss the social and political roles of 'traditional music' and its role in the formation of identity and national identity.

5. You will be able to discuss the poetic themes and structural features of traditional song.

6. You will be able to describe the relation between earlier musical forms and those current in traditional music.

7. You will be able to discuss the problems that such words as 'traditional' and 'Celtic' raise for our understanding of this music.

8. You will be able to discuss the importance of the publishing and recording industries, as well as the interaction between commercial concerns and music production.

Brief description

An introduction to the history, theory, and practice of 'traditional' music as it obtains in the Celtic-speaking countries.
