  • work independently on an open-ended project.
  • prepare and submit a comprehensive report to meet a given deadline.
  • defend the work at an oral examination.

Brief description

This double module takes the form of an individual project in which the student investigates a problem under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. The nature of the problem may be experimental, theoretical, data analysis or computer modelling. The double module is open to students following Joint Honours and Major/Minor Degree Schemes.

Content

The aim of this module is to provide the student with an opportunity to conduct an open-ended investigation of a particular topic in Physics. This should allow the students to apply knowledge and techniques they have learned in the course so far. Emphasis is placed on understanding and application of fundamental physical principles.

Students are expected to plan and manage an independent programme of study, with guidance from their Supervisor, and to write a formal scientific report.

An oral examination will be held at the end of the module to test understanding of the basic principles of the project.

Reading List

Supervisors will advise students on suitable textbooks for their project, and students are expected to conduct their own library searches to find suitable material. Primo search
