Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the sources, behaviour and environmental impacts of :-
- radionuclides
- heavy metals
- atmospheric pollutants with emphasis on ozone
- endocrine disrupting chemicals
- dioxin-like compounds
- pesticides
Aims
To gain a knowledge and understanding of different types of environmental pollution, their impacts on humans and on ecosystems.
Content
The module considers aspects of environmental pollution in terms of the essential chemistry of different pollutants, their behaviour in the environment and adverse effects on the biosphere. Lecture topics include:
- radionuclides, nuclear waste reprocessing and disposal;
- heavy metals;
- atmospheric pollution (photochemical smog, ozone);
- dioxin-like compounds;
- endocrine disrupting chemicals;
- pesticides.
