Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate knowledge of the major developments in German society and culture immediately before, during and after the First World War, and show understanding of their underlying causes.

2. to analyse carefully and evaluate texts and documents of the period within the framework of their historical context

3. carry out independent research

4. express themselves clearly, coherently and in a logical fashion, both orally and in writing.

Brief description

This module will introduce level 2 students to some key texts and movements during a period of crisis in German history, and thus deepen their understanding of German culture, ideas and literature. They will explore; the widespread sense of the decadence and materialism of German society voiced by the Expressionist artists and writers; the hopes for renewal which the War seemed to offer; German literary responses to the war; and literary representations of the socialist revolution in Bavaria in 1918.
