On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Brief description

Each degree scheme will have its own tutorial syllabus which focuses on the most recent research findings in the discipline. Topical issues are discussed which highlight the contribution geographers have to make in solving environmental, social and economic challenges in the 21st century. Embedded within the syllabus are sessions focusing on students own personal and skills development and activities which encourage engagement with employability. This module forms an important part of the IGES pastoral support system and it is here that the APPR programme is delivered.

Content

Semester 1
Week 2: Tutorial 1 - Introduce APPR, discuss 3rd year expectations, discuss geography in its applied context: set up Group Debate (students to work independently as a group to develop this).
Week 4: Presentation Skills (CDP session delivered by CAS)
Week 5: Writing up your research (year group workshop to support dissertation)
Week 6: Tutorial 2 - Group debate (assessed). Associated written assignment submitted 10 days later.
Week 7: Geographical Skills and Employability (year group meeting delivered by programme co-ordinators).
Week 8: Finalists workshop (CDP session delivered by CAS)
Week 10: Tutorial 3 - feedback on assignment 1, employability activity. Set independent reading assignment to be discussed in the next tutorial.

Semester 2
Week 3: Tutorial 4 - discuss reading assignment (formative assessment), set up assessment 2 on current research debates.
Week 5: Tutorial 5 - individual APPR meeting, reflection on skills development, discuss examination results, set up group discussion for tutorial 6..
Week 7: Tutorial 6 - feedback on assessment 2, group discussion on either key individuals, geography in the news, beyond Anglo-American geography

Communication Report and essay writing skills are developed. In addition to the assessed debate, students will be expected to contribute to group discussions on a range of topics (e.g. new research papers, geography in the news, employability).
Improving own Learning and Performance Dedicated tutorial focusing on self-assessment of subject-specific and generic skills.
Information Technology Word-processing, powerpoint will be used in preparation of assessed work.
Personal Development and Career planning Dedicated year group and tutorial sessions on career planning.
Problem solving Geographical problems in an applied context will be explored through the group debate and associated assignment.
Research skills Independent research for written assignments and group debate. Additional research will be required for other tutorial activities which are formatively assessed.
Team work The debate topic is chosen by students and requires group work in preparation for the case for or against.
