Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Describe how information science, information management and knowledge management evolved;

2. Identify the main roles of information professionals;

3. Demonstrate an understanding of the meaning applied to information in varying contexts.

4. Discuss implications of information technology, such as the impact of the internet on information use


5. Describe the types of recorded information available, and how different information formats operate;

6. Undertake an effective search for information using a variety of resources, with an emphasis on those provided by AU.

Brief description

The aim of this module is to give students an introduction to the meaning and foundations of the information profession by investigating the varied roles of the information professional, and why these are important in today¿s rapidly changing world. It also aims to place information studies in context by looking at the development of information studies as an academic discipline. Finally, students will be introduced to information searching and encouraged to think critically about the information sources available to them through the University and more widely.

Content will include the following:
  • Introducing information: meanings and changing contexts
  • The development of Information Studies
  • Introducing the information profession: background, changing roles and developing skills
  • The changing relationship between information and technology ¿ the internet
  • Searching for information; researching for academic study.

Problem solving Written assignments and group discussions will encourage an investigative and critical approach towards key issues.
Research skills To be developed through two written assignments.
Subject Specific Skills Will introduce areas of key knowledge for the information profession (Learning Outcomes 4, 5, 6) as well as an understanding of the profession in wider contexts (Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3)
Team work Some group work in seminars will be included
