The course studies Spanish and Spanish American history and culture using film and literature to illustrate the history of struggle in all its forms in the two regions.

It examines first the history of Spanish American Independence from the point of view of Spain and Spanish America and the effect that independence had on both regions, before focusing on Spain and Spanish America in the twentieth century. Using a cultural-historical approach the course aims to contextualize aspects of cultural production emanating from these two regions at important historical moments.

This module is structured around the following topics:

A. 1808-1898: The struggle for Independence and the end of Empire (Weeks 1 and 2)
B. 1898: The crisis of the Spanish Empire: The Case of Cuba and its consequences (Weeks 3, 4 and 5)
C. Spain and Spanish America - Early 20th century: The struggle for national identity (Weeks 6 and 7)
D. Spain and Spanish America ¿ Late 20th century: The struggle for democracy (Weeks 8, 9 and 10)
