Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
demonstrate a critical understanding of the key developmetns of Spanish literature since 1849;
demonstrate a critical understanding of contemporarey debates concerning these developments;
articulate their own stances on these debates;
demonstrate a critical understanding of the complex relationship between literature and its cinematic representation in contemporary Spain;
demonstrate that they have mastered advanced skills as critical readers of culture;
demonstrate that they have mastered sophisticated analytical skills (both immanent and transcendent);
use secondary literature critically;
express themselves clearly, coherently and in a logical fashion, both orally and in writing;
demonstrate that they have a solid foundation for further postgraduate work.
Brief description
This course will examine a range of literary texts and their representation in cinema in order to study in depth the realist and naturalist literary movements in Spanish society. Lectures will give an overview of important thematic represenatations from 1874 to 1900 in both literary and filmic form, and the seminars will give the students the opportunity to explore in details the responses to the social and political chanegs following the decline of imperialistic Spanish society. In this way, the students will gain from the immanent and transcendent ananlysis not only a detailed knowledge of the features used in the artistic representation but will also hone a critical analysis of the transformations which led to the division of Spain.
