Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

  1. Produce written work of a style and standard appropriate to university level coursework.
  2. Safely conduct some basic chemical procedures
  3. Select and use appropriate mathematical procedures
  4. Work as part of a team and give an oral presentation.
  5. Use and interpret geological maps.
  6. Describe the basic functionality of a GIS and produce a basic GIS map.

Brief description

This module will be taught in three parallel 3 parts: lectures, tutorials and practicals (geological mapping and GIS). For details see the next section.

Content

1) The tutorial and lecture programme will be structured as follows:

2 Lecture: Introduction and course information
3 Tutorial: Introductory discussion including session on the Blackboard learning system
4 Lecture: Essay writing
5 Tutorial: Essay 1 topics given; open discussion
6 Lecture: Searching for scientific literature and information
7 Tutorial: open discussion
8 Lecture: Basic Chemistry including assignment; Students hand in essay 1.
9 Tutorial: open discussion; Essay 1 returned to students.
10 Lecture: Basic Chemistry (continued).
11 Tutorial: Students hand in chemical skills exercise.
12 No class
13 Lecture: Laboratory and field notebooks.
14 Lecture: Producing technical reports.
15 Tutorial: Essay 2 topic provided; open discussion; chemical skills exercise returned to students
16 Maths workshop 1
17 Maths workshop 2 Students hand in essay 2
18 Maths workshop 3
19 Maths workshop 4 (including assignment)

2) Geological maps. Students will be introduced to geological maps and their uses through 10 x 2 hour practicals covering the following themes:
Ordnance survey maps
Introduction to geological maps
Development of map skills using problem maps
Development of map skills using geological maps

3) Introduction to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing/mapping will be covered through 4 x 2 hour practicals
