Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence post-natal growth and development
Critically review the interaction of hormones with cells
Discuss in detail insulin resistance and the interaction of this with disease
Discuss in detail the hypothalamic control of metabolism.
Brief description
This module considers the patterns of growth and development of the live weight, carcass tissues and major organs of animals. The effects of breed, sex, nutrition and exercise are considered. Subsequently, the role of growth hormone and the IGF family of proteins in growth and lactation in the horse will be discussed. Control of feed intake and the regulation of body adiposity will also be examined.
Content
The aims of the module are:
To provide the student with an understanding of the control of vital regulatory processes in mammals. It will also consider the control of growth and patterns of growth along with the factors affecting development.
It will achieve this by considering the following areas:
Introduction to endocrinology
Interactions between hormones and their receptors.
Hypothalamic-pituitary axis, insulin and IGFs
Approaches to the study of growth and development of the whole animal,
Carcass tissues and major organs will be investigated with reference to applications to nutrition, genetic selection and care of the growing animal.
