On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Critically review and discuss the concepts, arguments and principles surrounding mathematical development.

Critically examine the ways in which young children learn mathematics.

Critically evaluate the effects of parents, teachers and government policies on early mathematical development.

Demonstrate a critical engagement with relevant source material.

Brief description

This module is designed to develop students' understanding of the young children's mathematical development and the theoretical framework and practical implications for the mathematical education of young children

Content

Lectures and seminars will be based on the following:

Lecture and seminar 2: The way children learn mathematics
Lecture and seminar 3: Teaching mathematics
Lecture and seminar 4: The role of adults in relation to mathematical development
Lecture and seminar 5: Early Learning Goals for mathematical development
Lecture and seminar 6: Mathematics in the National Curriculum
Lecture and seminar 7: The effect of family and other values and beliefs on mathematical development
Lecture and seminar 8: Language and mathematics
Lecture and seminar 9: Gender and mathematics
