On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. understand the roots of the Spanish conflict previous to the civil war
2. have a critical capacity to analyse literary texts in their historical, political and philosophical context
3. analyse the stylistic resources used in this period
Aims
This module provides a comprehensive understanding of the intellectual and literary responses given by Spanish writers after the loss of the last Spanish colonies between 1880 and 1930. The study of different passages taken from intellectual essays and the main literary works of the time will provide a foundation in order critically to analyse the concern for the regeneration of Spain at this time, and analyse the question of a new national identity for Spain.
Brief description
The module will deal with the intellectual debate on the political and social crisis expressed in the _Idearium espanol_ and _En torno al casticismo_ to provide an overview of the 'Spanish problem' in the late XIX century and early XX century. The study of three of the main works of Spanish literature of the so-called "Generation of 1898" will provide an accurate description of the challenges faced by Spanish writers and their philosophical views. Imminent analysis will provide the necessary tools to comment critically on the use of language in lterature.
