On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge of how to report a research study

Demonstrate knowledge of the key elements of high quality research

Demonstrate competence in basic data analysis and interpretation.

Aims

Research is central to the development of knowledge within most academic disciplines and Sport & Exercise Science is no exception. Understanding how to conduct research is important in enabling students to critically analyse existing research and to conduct an independent research project in the final year of their degree. Research Methods is therefore a key module in the portfolio of any undergraduate degree in Sport & Exercise Science. The aim of this introductory module is to increase students' awareness of the importance of research, of different research methods and key concepts in research and to its underpinning role in the development of both their own and the discipline's body of knowledge.

Content

The module will cover material at an introductory level. Indicative content includes:
The nature and importance of research
Research questions and hypotheses
Research approaches and methods
Data analysis and interpretation

Brief description

The purpose of this module is to provide an introduction to key issues in research and research methods. The module will comprise a number of different teaching media through which these key concepts will be developed:
Lectures - to introduce key concepts in research and data analysis
Computer workshops - to introduce students to the analysis and reporting of quantitative data collected in research
Seminars - to offer opportunities to consolidate and apply knowledge developed in lectures

Communication Written communication is required for the research reports
Improving own Learning and Performance Students will be given opportunities to complete formative research reports and SPSS analysis. Feedback will be provided on their performance and they will be able to use this feedback to improve their own learning and performance.
Information Technology Use of SPSS is a key aspect of the module.
Personal Development and Career planning
Problem solving In the context of using literature to develop fundamental research questions.
Research skills Implicit within the module. Knowledge but not practical competence is assessed.
