Semester Assessment 3,000 WORD ASSIGNMENT  A critical appraisal of a pre-defined aspect of countryside management. This to be based upon the study tour visits (including assessed daily reports contributing 25% to the assignment) and the students own research into the area.  100%
Supplementary Assessment 3,000 WORD ASSIGNMENT  A critical appraisal of a pre-defined aspect of countryside management. This to be based upon a different aspect of the study tour visits than in the first attempt. Separate assignments will be written specific to the degree scheme students are registered for.  100%

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Identify and evaluate a range of issues affecting the management of the countryside of Wales

2. Identify and evaluate the policy and management approaches taken by land management agencies towards the management of countryside capital

3. Critically assess the practices of a range of management agencies (dependent on scheme of study)

Brief description

This 10 credit module will be based upon a combination of day trips to countryside sites in Wales and workshop sessions to allow in depth study of the issues associated with the management of countryside capital and to evaluate the policies and management methods used. The visits will be integrative and cover the whole spectrum of countryside management from conservation to recreation. The study tour will be based in Aberystwyth and will occur in the week before term starts in September. The module will be credited to semester 1

Content

Each student will attend five full or part day visits to countryside sites around Wales. The visits will be designed to address the following content areas:
Access; visitor management; interpretation; environmental education; protected area management; species conservation; habitat conservation; landscape; rural community development; economic development.

Communication Written communication will be developed through the assignment. Developed and assessed. Verbal communication will be developed during the visits- developed but not assessed
Information Technology The assignment should be word processed and student will need to use IT to research and present their findings
Personal Development and Career planning Visits will include meetings with organisations and individuals directly involved with countryside careers
Research skills Students will be required to carry out detailed research as part of the assignment
