Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module, students should have an understanding of:
- the significance of local history: analysis of the role, development and growing significance of local history in Wales;
- major sources of information: i. archive and record sources (Ecclesiastical Records, Administrative Records, Court Records, Estate Papers) ii. other sources (maps and plans, newspapers and periodicals, prints and photographs, oral history, census returns and population studies) iii. sources of subject areas (family history, sources for Education, transport and communication, trade and industry, agriculture and rural life, towns and villages, linguistic evidence, buildings and architecture);
- local history publications: examples of Welsh local history publications produced by individuals, societies, organisations and institutions
Brief description
The last twenty-five years has witnessed an enormous growth of interest in local history in Wales as elsewhere and an increase in the range and format of materials that are now available for those pursuing the history and development of a particular community or a particular local theme. More emphasis than ever before is placed on "local studies" within the National Curriculum and the growth of Heritage Centres and specialist Museums of various kinds in Wales in recent years has focussed greater attention on this area of study. Welsh family history societies have been particularly successful since 1980. All this is reflected in the increased demands for local materials in libraries and record offices and in the proliferation of publications of a local nature in both Welsh and English.

- the role of Cadw Welsh Historic Monuments, The Royal Commission in the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, Local History and denominational history societies in Wales
