Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1) Select and implement appropriate methodologies for the measurement, sampling and analysis of river systems parameters relevant to catchment managers.
2) Present and interpret data in a rigorous and technically-sound manner, both orally and in the form of a scientific report.
Brief description
This module is based on a 3-4 day residential field course to be held during weeks 2-6 of Semester one. This module aims to provide a technical framework for field-based studies of fluvial processes and management, and to facilitate the development of expertise in specific measurement, analytical and interpretation techniques. Through this module students will develop skills in the selection and implementation of appropriate methodologies for the measurement, sampling and analysis of fluvial processes, and be able to present and interpret data in a rigorous and technically-sound manner.
Content
- Methodology for surveying river systems (e.g. geomorphological mapping, topographic surveys), river water and sediment sampling, and river corridor surveys.
- Field course, probably to the Yorkshire Dales, examining contemporary fluvial processes, the effects of environmental change on river systems, river system contamination and data gathering.
- Laboratory analysis of sediment samples, interpretation and presentation of the data collected in the field
