Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • survey the principal administrative developments from medieval times to the 17th century;

* outline the range and nature of records produced;

* state which records have generally survived, and where they can be found;

* critically appraise the evidential use of documentary sources

Brief description

Within a survey approach, and concentrating on post-Conquest developments, this module considers the administrative structures of government and other organisations that generated substantial ranges and series of records from medieval times to the seventeenth century, and demonstrates the continuing history of offices and institutions which originate in the middle ages and evolve through modern times. It therefore provides a framework of knowledge for the Study of Records, and Palaeography and Diplomatic modules.
