Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Analyse and critically evaluate a range of dramatic texts within the period in question;
Engage critically with the skills and processes of production of the texts from the period in question;
Interpret critically the cultural frameworks surrounding the social purpose of drama in the period under review;
Formulate informed arguments reflecting knowledge of current debates and the ability to perform research both independently and as part of a group through the presentation of a written assignment and the group presentation.
Brief description
This module is the first of a series of modules within the revised Theatre curriculum which offers a detailed exploration of a selection of recent British drama texts, within a cultural and political context. Students will be given the opportunity to consider theatrical problems and consequences of previous and possible productions.
Through directed reading and weekly discussions students will be encouraged to develop original ideas about the specifically theatrical dimensions and demands of the texts under review.

The series of lectures and associated seminars will focus on the following content:
Lecture 1: Stuck in the Teeth of the Machine: green, and Kelleher on green/Politics
Lecture 2: What a Wonderful World: Caryl Churchill's Far Away and Anthony Neilson's The Wonderful World of Dissocia
Lecture 3: Mon 13 Feb: Escaping the Self?: Kane's Crave and 4.48 Psychosis
Lecture 4: Magical Realism: Ed Thomas's Song from a Forgotten City and Gas Station Angel
Lecture 5: City Life, Country Life and The Lie: Marber's Closer, Butterworth's The River
Lecture 6: Catastrophic Bodies and Landscapes: Howard Barker's I Saw Myself and Found in the Ground
Lecture 7: 'It's incidents like this does put tourists off Ireland': McDonagh's the Lieutenant of Inishmore and O'Rowe's Howie the Rookie
Lecture 8: Legends Renewed: Rudkin's Red Sun and Merlin Unchained
