Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Examine technologies used to characterise the physiology of equine athletic performance and evaluate their efficacy in predicting potential performance.

2. Describe the potential and limitations of measuring muscular strength of the horse in relation to exercise and training.

3. Describe mechanisms of equine thermoregulation and devise strategies for ensuring equine welfare when exercising in cold and hot/humid climates

4. Please give length of examination, details of course work and percentage weighting of each and explain how each learning outcome is linked to the methods of assessment:

Brief description

This module will examine modern methods for evaluating equine performance and welfare during exercise, as well as critically analyse these techniques for predicting elite performance. Specific issues affecting horse welfare during training and competition will be examined in terms of thermoregulation and common diseases that adversely affect the horse'r health and performance.

Content

The topics covered by the module will include a study of the integration of specific body systems during exercise and after training to produce optimum athletic performance, advances in technology for the investigation of equine exercise, current understanding of thermoregulatory responses during exercise in the heat, training strategies and diseases that limit performance potential.

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Students will be required to analyse data collected using Excel and heart rate monitor software during practicals, although these tasks will not be formally assessed as data quality from field experiments can be variable.
Communication The seminar presentation will inherently require students to communicate their findings verbally and through PowerPoint presentation and a proportion of the marks will be allocated for this skill, therefore this skill will be assessed and feedback given.
Improving own Learning and Performance
Information Technology The seminar presentation will be presented in PowerPoint and is expected to be completed in a professional and conventional style, which will be assessed and written feedback given. In addition students will be required to analyse data collected using Excel and heart rate monitor software during practicals, although these tasks will not be formally assessed as data quality from field experiments can be variable.
Personal Development and Career planning
Problem solving
Research skills As part of this module students will be required to undertake reading in addition to their lectures to gain high exam marks and complete the seminar presentation. Quality and range of references used will be assessed in the seminar presentation and written feedback given.
Subject Specific Skills This module will furnish students with a knowledge of equine exercise physiology that will equip them for assessing and enhancing the performance of athletes and ensuring their health and welfare at all times.
