Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, student should be able to:

1. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of a range of theories of writing

2. explore a range of writing practices from a variety of theoretical perspectives

3. produce their own writing and to reflect critically upon it

4. express themselves clearly in writing (assessed) and in speech (non-assessed)

Content

The themes covered in seminars may include:

De-and re-centring canonical texts through textual interventions
Theories of `Raw' and `Cooked' writing
History and co(n)text
Subjectivity and subjection, agents and agency
Selves and others, centres and margins
Sense and non/sense
Narratology: relationships between narrator and narratee
Metatextuality
Theories of Dialogue, Dialectic and Discourse
Cross-cultural dialogues
Imitation, parody and collage

Aims

This module aims to develop students' knowledge and understanding of a range of theories of writing and to enable them to explore a range of writing practices from a variety of theoretical perspectives. It also aims to develop students' ability to produce and present their own writing and their reflections on writing. By developing a self-reflexive writing practice, this module will prepare students for the Writing Project in the final semester.

Brief description

Students will develop and explore a range of writing techniques, and draw upon a reservoir of theoretical ideas and literary texts to strengthen creative-critical practice.
