Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Read in a critical way intellectually challenging books and articles in French.
2. Analyse in a critical manner the cultural, political, social and legal issues in France.
3. Develop sophisticated written structures and use proficient terminology in French.
4. Develop sophisticated oral structures and the skills for oral presentations in French.

Aims

This module should enable students to have a grasp of French Society and analyse in a critical manner the cultural, political, social and legal affairs taking place in France in the year of study.

Brief description

This module, delivered through the medium of French, offers a thematic exploration of current affairs in contemporary France. The material covers a variety of perspectives on cultural, legal, political and social issues. Introductory lectures provide a background of information and will guide students towards an investigation of relevant data and material. They will be expected to contribute extensively to the seminars and debates which will also be conducted through the medium of French. Students will have to search for further material allied to the themes which stem from the Reading List, governmental official websites, the national and regional newspapers, official web pages and political parties' manifestos. The content of this module will be of great relevance for helping students prepare their Year Abroad and find a suitable Year Abroad dissertation title.

The continuous assessment will be in the target language. Content and language in continuous assessment (oral and written) will be equally weighted.
