The aim of the annual MEDEA Awards is to encourage innovation and good practice in the use of media in education. The MEDEA Awards recognise and promote excellence in the production and pedagogical design of media-rich learning resources.

The first MEDEA Awards 2008 were launched in December 2007 and even during its first year, the interest was very high. On the closing date of 30 September 2008, the MEDEA Secretariat had received 121 submissions from 25 different countries. Entries came from all types of organisations including professional production facilities, schools, audio visual departments of universities, training providers, public authorities, public service broadcasters and content providers.

The presentation will provide an overview of the results of the first year of the MEDEA Awards, providing in effect a snapshot of the current state of media production for education.

Entries for the MEDEA Awards 2009 are open from 1 March 2009. In addition to last year's MEDEA Award and the Special Award (which was won by a group of 17 year old pupils) there are two more awards to compete for this year: first of all the Award for Creativity and Innovation, set up to coincide with the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009, which aims to specifically award creative and innovative use of media in education. The second new award is the European Commission supported Award for collaboration in media production and use.
