Guidelines on Staff Student Consultative Committees

3.0 Membership of SSCCs

3.1  Staff Representatives

  • should be responsive to student concerns, have a certain standing in the department and be able to speak with some authority on issues likely to be raised;
  • should act responsively and constructively at SSCCs;
  • the number of staff representatives should not as a matter of principle exceed the number of student representatives;
  • notwithstanding the need for staff of standing, it is not expected that Heads of Departments should be members of SSCCs: they should rather be seen to deal impartially with matters raised at the Committee at second hand.

3.2  Student representatives

  • should be appointed by the student departmental body;
  • should be representative of all the students pursuing modules or courses, including postgraduates, within a particular department;
  • should be responsive to the views of the department's students and to present comments which are not necessarily their own;
  • should act responsibly and constructively at SSCCs.

3.3  Number of SSCCs

All departments are expected to have at least one SSCC. In larger departments, it may be appropriate to have separate SSCCs for each degree scheme, and where appropriate another for postgraduates. Where there are significant numbers on part-time or distance learning schemes a separate SSCC for each may prove very useful in addressing the particular concerns of these students.
