Who gets the top bunk?

This is up to you and your new room-mate to decide.  The Guild of Students is providing a bunk welcome pack which will contain some useful hints and tips for bunk-life.

Will I find out who I’ll be sharing with before I get to my room?

No.  We don’t send out the details of the other person in the room before you turn up, just in case in the time between sending out the offers and the start of term, the situation changes and you don’t end up sharing together.

What happens if I don't accept the offer of a bunk room are there any other accommodation options?

You don’t have to accept our offer of accommodation.  You may be able to find something in the private sector, although accommodation in the town is limited.  We are unable to offer a different option to you as all our single and twin rooms are full.

How long will I be in the bunk room? Am I a priority if a single room becomes available?

Every year, all universities experience a settling down period where some students decide that university life isn’t for them. At this point, some single rooms may be available.  In light of this, you will be automatically placed on the transfer list, in date and time order that the University received confirmation of acceptance of your place at University and at some point you may be transferred to a single room.

When do I find out my position on the bunk accommodation list?

We will provide you with your number on the list at the end of the first week of term.

Who will I be sharing with?

Pairings are random but all students sharing bunk rooms will be in single sex rooms.  We have tried various combinations in the past, pairing students on the basis of interest, home towns etc but find that randomly pairing people works best.

How do I opt to share with my friend?

Once you have accepted your offer of accommodation you will be automatically sent a link to our association pages to enable you to choose to live with a friend

How do I take up my offer of accommodation?

Once you have formally accepted your place at Aberystwyth University we will e-mail instructions on how to electronically confirm your place.

If my bunk mate leaves will you put another student in their bunk or will I then be left on my own to pay single room rent?

We will try our very best not to, however if there are students waiting for a place in University accommodation we will offer them the choice to fill the second bunk space.  We will phone/text you before the other person joins you. so please make sure we have your current mobile number. If not, we will write to you confirming a date that your room will revert to single occupancy and the single room rent will apply.

Transfer requests

What if I don’t get on with my room-mate?

Please come and see us in the Accommodation Office (Penbryn reception) or contact your Residential Support Tutor.

All Residences have a support network of dedicated University Residential Tutors. Your Resident Tutor will contact you on your arrival to welcome you to your residential community. Their role is to help you settle in and make the most of your opportunities beyond the classroom. They also assist if you come across barriers to your success and happiness. Whether you are new to Residences, or returning, your Resident Tutor will enable you to access the entire range of support services within the University.

Teams in each residence provide an on-call, out-of-hours service at evenings and weekends. The details of on-call rotas are emailed to residents each week. There are also weekly surgeries and each tutor has a specific 'patch' – a group of flats/houses – for which they are responsible.

At the start of each year Resident Tutors hold welcome activities to enable you to meet and get to know your neighbours. They also work closely with the Students' Union in setting up Residence Committees where you get an opportunity to organise social events and have a say in how your residence works.

How do I request a transfer?

All students in bunk rooms will automatically be placed on a transfer list in time and date order of when you confirmed that you would be attending Aberystwyth University.  As single rooms become available we will write to the person at the top of the list and offer it to them.  If a student chooses not to take up the offer of a transfer, the offer will then move to the next person on the list.  This does not include when a student needs to be transferred on the grounds of medical or welfare needs.

Where am I on the bunk transfer list?

You will be automatically placed on the transfer list, in date and time order that the University received confirmation of acceptance of your place at University.

Will I have a regular update on my position on this list?

Yes, weekly updates will be sent to you by email.

How likely is it that I will end up in a single room?

We don’t know. This depends on someone else vacating a single room and we can’t predict how many people will do this.

My question isn’t answered by the above, who do I contact?

Please contact the Accommodation Office on bunkrooms@aber.ac.uk  or 01970 622900.We will try our very best to respond as soon as possible, we have a dedicated team ready to deal with your enquiries.
