Introduction to Stone Lithography
Monday 13 – Friday 17 June 2011
Stone Lithography is a planographic process of printing from limestone invented by Alois Senefelder in 1798. Commonly associated with the work of nineteenth and twentieth century artists including Goya, Delacroix, Daumier, Toulouse Lautrec and Picasso, today, in the twenty-first century lithography remains a vital means of graphic expression and is as popular with contemporary artists such as Jim Dine, William Kentridge and Paula Rego.
Introduction to Stone Lithography is a five-day intensive course that will introduce students to the exciting potential for drawing and printing from freshly grained Bavarian limestone. Drawing using greasy materials, crayons and tusche – lithography presents the artist with unique opportunities for mark-making not possible in any other media.
The course aims to
provide practical tuition and experience of stone lithography. This workshop
includes practical hands-on experience, introductory talks and opportunity to
view prints from the University of Aberystwyth Collection. As well as technical
demonstrations students will also have opportunity for one-to-one tuition and
there will be time for students to print their own work. The course fee allows
for a maximum of £30 materials and paper. Further consumables may be purchased
from the college shop.
Course tutor Paul Croft qualified as Master Printer at The Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque in 1996. He is author of Stone Lithography 2001 and Plate Lithography 2003, published by A&C Black as part of the series of Printmaking Handbooks. The course takes place in the well-equipped lithography studio at The School of Art Aberystwyth, located close to the town centre and only ten minutes walk from the railway station. Situated on the beautiful coast of Cardigan Bay, Aberystwyth is a thriving university town with excellent facilities, accommodation, cafes, restaurants and bars.
