Welsh adaptations of the ‘The Mole Sisters’ series

Catrin Elan, a student from Aberystwyth University’s Welsh Department who came to CAA on work experience, had the opportunity to adapt ten of the little Mole Sisters books to Welsh. They were published a week before she graduated from the University.
The Mole Sisters books are aimed at young children under 5 years old – and the Welsh series is called Nansi a Nel. The original English books were written and illustrated by Roslyn Schwartz, and they’ve already been adapted to 11 languages, which proves their popularity worldwide.
Catrin, who is from Tremadog originally, studied a single honours degree in Welsh for three years. One of the modules she chose to follow was ‘Y Gymraeg yn y Gweithle’ (‘Welsh in the Workplace’), and it was through this that she had the opportunity to come on work experience with CAA. This is a new course with an occupational slant to it, which will help create graduates who are confident to use the Welsh language in all kinds of organisations, and public and private businesses. The students have a period of work experience as part of this course.
In Catrin’s words, “The work experience was very valuable – and it’s strange to think that my name is now going to be on bookshelves across the country! I hope that Nansi and Nel’s adventures will bring a smile to the faces of Wales’ young children – they’re irresistble and irrepressible moles, and they turn any dull situation into an opportunity for fun!”
