Why do work experience?
Apart from the fact that work experience can help you develop the skills employers are looking for, there are a great many additional benefits which you may not have considered. Not only will the transferable skills you gain make your CV worth a second look but employers are increasingly using work experience as an opportunity to 'road test' potential applicants, meaning it could even lead to a permanent job. Added to that, work experience is an ideal opportunity to put learning into practice, improve your knowledge of work, gain a great reference and network of contacts, all whilst potentially earning money!
What counts as work experience?
Work experience opportunities come in many shapes and sizes, including casual work, sandwich placements, work placements, work-based projects, internships, work shadowing, insight courses, voluntary work, education programmes and international programmes - the list goes on! Don't be confused - they all give you a chance to see the world of work and develop vital skills that will allow you to make informed decisions and impress potential employers.
What are the options?
Work experience can be undertaken during term-time, vacations or as a year out during or after your degree. You may have an industrial year integrated into your degree scheme (contact your department for further information on this). Whether you are looking at a week, a term or a year, there is an option available to suit your needs. Follow the links below for further information.
