Responsibilities

The Assistant Coordinator’s role is broad and encompasses teaching and academic programme management; continuing professional development activities; coaching and mentoring; business development activities and strategic project management. 

Research Interests

Giles' research interests are around the development of learning in complex organisations - at individual, group and organisational levels.

Biography

Professional Background

Giles joined CDSAP in 2007. As a qualified teacher Giles has taught at secondary, post secondary and in higher education with over ten years teaching and development experience. Previous to joining Aberystwyth University Giles worked with organisations as diverse as the Royal Navy, University of the West of England, University of Bath, HEFCE, AHRC and the British Academy.

Recent Key Achievements

  • Reviewer, Higher Education Academy’s Teaching Development Grant: Collaborative Grant Scheme, (2012).
  • Jointly project managed the review, consultation and design of a new 'Senior Management Induction Programme’ with the Director of Human Resources (2012).
  • Project managed the review, consultation, design and launch of a new 'Staff Development and Performance Review’ process and online Management Information System (2009-2012).
  • Project consultant for €60,000.00 European Commission Lifelong Learning Programme project 'Learning EU at School' with the Centre for European Studies and School of Education and Lifelong Learning (2012).
  • Reviewer, Higher Education Academy’s Teaching Development Grant: Departmental Grant Scheme, (2011).
  • Reviewer, Higher Education Academy’s National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (2011).
  • Project managed the review, consultation, design and launch of a new 'Welcome New Colleagues' induction process (2011). 
  • Project initiator and consultant for Dr Elena Korosteleva's successful €45,000.001 Centre for European Studies Jean Monnet Chair application (2011).
  • Winner of the David Davies Prize for Human Resource Management (MBA) 2011
  • Co-applicant for a £5,000.00 Higher Education Academy: C-SAP Small Research Grant entitled “Emergent Learning Outcomes: acknowledging complexity for liberated learning in International Politics (2011).
  • Project Consultant responsible for conceptualisation, strategic vision and development of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), Learning and Teaching Strategy Implementation Fund: Aberystwyth University for £12,000.00 for the “Centre for European Studies” project, with Dr Elena Korosteleva (2010).
  • Co-authored a successful bid for £9,850.00 from the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education for a project, 'People Led Change', developing performance management in higher education. Undertook primary research and wrote technical aspects and costing for the project. Joint project manager for project implementation (2010).
  • Project Consultant on the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), Learning and Teaching Strategy Implementation Fund: Aberystwyth University for £4,000.00 for the a “Belbin Team Roles as an aide to pedagogy and enactive learning” project, with Dr Mark Smith, Geography and Earth Sciences (2010).
  • Awarded £500.00 small grant from the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) for a project developing non-academic support staff in supporting the student experience (2009).
  • Devised, designed and took to accreditation by Higher Education Academy at Standard Descriptor 1 Supporting Students Module (2009).
  • CDSAP shortlisted for Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award, for Outstanding Human Resources Team (2009); and, Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award for Outstanding Student Services Team (2010)
  • Co-organiser of the “Supporting the Student Experience: a Welsh Perspective” Symposium July 19-20 2010
  • Reinvigorated administration of the innovative Directors’ of Learning and Teaching Roundtable which was highlighted by PA Consulting as one of the key “...mechanisms for sharing of best practice and utilising particular expertise across departments” at Aberystwyth University.
  • Conceived and developed the Aberystwyth University Learning and Teaching Summer School (2009, 2011), a biennial international pedagogic development event.
