New Mammographic Modelling Methods Resarch Grant

08 October 2012

Doctor Neil Mac Parthaláin has been awarded a NISCHR grant starting on 1st Oct. 2012, to develop new mammographic modelling methods.

The proposed research will develop a mammographic model representing the normal breast, based on mammograms containing no abnormalities. The model uses local information and will consider spatial location within the breast, and will be able to model variations in mammographic tissue. This normality model will be used for the detection of abnormalities by estimating the deviation from the model resulting in prompts for CAD systems. This work has the potential therefore to benefit both patients and radiologists by improving the performance of current CAD systems.

Professor Reyer Zwiggelaar is a co-investigator, along with radiologist collaborators from both Cardiff and Norwich.
