Research with impact
18 December 2014
The Aberystwyth Computer Science department was delighted with achieving its aim of maintaining its excellent research profile in the REF 2014 assessment, while increasing the number of staff returned by 60% over the 2008 results. The Department submitted 99.2% of its academic staff to REF 2014, the third highest proportion in the UK and a clear indication that students are taught by staff who are at the cutting edge of the field.
The Department produced more world-leading (4*) and internationally excellent (3*) research than any other university in Wales. REF 2014 also assessed the impact of research on society, industry and government policy and the Department delivered 100% of its research impact at the top 3* and 4* level, demonstrating that our research makes a real difference in the world outside academia.
Dr Bernie Tiddeman, Head of Department, said "This is an excellent result for our Department and for our students, who can be sure they are being taught by staff whose research is internationally recognised and has impact beyond the confines of academia. With one third of the staff returned being early career, we also have a great basis on which to build in the future."
