NSS 2017

09 August 2017

Aberystwyth University’s flagship Computer Science degree programme has been given an impressive 92% overall satisfaction rating in an influential poll of students.

Published Wednesday 9 August, the National Student Survey also shows top satisfaction levels for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics, and Space Science & Robotics students in the Department of Computer Science.

The Department’s final-year students whose studies come under the NSS subject area covering Robotics said they were 100% satisfied overall.

The Department’s achievements are part of a wider NSS success story at Aberystwyth University, which is rated the best in Wales and one of the top five higher education institutions in the UK for overall student satisfaction.

The results show that overall satisfaction amongst students at Aberystwyth University stands at 91% - well above the average UK figure of 84%.

Dr Bernie Tiddeman, Head of Computer Science at Aberystwyth University, said: “Staff in the Computer Science department are pleased with another good performance in the NSS this year. In particular, we are pleased our ‘Space Science and Robotics’ and ‘Artificial Intelligence and Robotics’ degrees are ranked top in the UK in their subject grouping with 100% student satisfaction.

“We are also pleased with our performance in a number of particular subject areas.  Assessment and Feedback is an area we have paid particular attention to in recent years, where we are in the UK top 20 for the subject.  Our results on Academic Support reflect the work we put into helping students, and our efforts in widening participation have helped to transform students from diverse backgrounds into highly employable graduates during their time with us.

“Our degree schemes are demanding, requiring creativity, hard work and intellectual rigour, but we put in place the support needed to succeed, and this is reflected in both the NSS and our excellent employment statistics.  We are happy with these results, and will continue to improve the learning experience for all our students."

If you’re interested in studying at Aberystwyth Computer Science Department and finding out why our students are so satisfied with their courses, it’s not too late. We still have some clearing places left for the 2017-18 academic year or come along and visit during one of our Open Days.

The NSS figures follow closely on the heels of the latest employability figures for UK universities which showed that 98.5% of Computer Science graduates were in work or further study six months after leaving Aberystwyth University in 2016.

The National Student Survey is carried out annually by IPSOS Mori on behalf of the UK’s higher education funding councils and interviews more than 300,000 final year students in Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Students are asked to rate their university across a wide range of measures including quality of teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources, learning community and student voice.

Aberystwyth University’s rankings are based on the overall satisfaction question and use the list of higher education institutes from The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.
