Irish Language and Literature

As with Celtic Studies, Irish Language and Literature is located under the umbrella of the Department of Welsh, the largest and oldest of all such Departments in Wales. Irish can be studied at Aberystwyth at Level 1, in your first year of study, and as individual modules within the following study schemes: Celtic Studies, Welsh and the Celtic Languages, Welsh First Language.

You may also study Irish as part of a joint honours degree in Irish Language and Literature plus another subject. The course takes four years, and normally includes a year of study at a university in Ireland. Although some orientation on the history and culture of the Celtic speaking peoples is given in your first year, the emphasis of the Irish course is on the language and literature of Ireland from the earliest times to the present day. No prior knowledge of Irish is assumed but there is a separate stream for those who have studied Irish before. There are optional modules on Scottish Gaelic, on comparative Celtic literature, and on the relationship between Irish and other Celtic languages.

There is a wide choice of subjects available as a joint honours degree with Irish Language and Literature.
