Professional Welsh Single Honours

3 years (Welsh first language)  - Q5PO

This is a new degree scheme which will be available in the Welsh Department from 2011.  An 'A' grade in Welsh (first language) at A Level will be required.

Part 1

In your first year, as well as our traditional literature and language courses (see Part 1 modules), you will study 'Cyflwyniad i Gymraeg Proffesiynol' ('Introduction to Professional Welsh'), a module which introduces a range of skills such as simultaneous translation, adaptation for radio/television/film, writing reports, taking minutes, editing, typesetting , proof reading, adapting books or songs from another language.

This module will also introduce subjects such as Welsh in the Assembly, journalism, and many other aspects of the media and publishing industry in Wales.

Part 2

In your second year we will arrange a period of work experience in one of the 30 public and private sector institutions associated with the Department, and you will compile a portfolio based on your experience of Welsh in the Workplace (the popular 'Cymraeg yn y Gweithle' module).  You will also embark on new and challenging courses such as 'Trosi ac Addasu' (Translating and Adapting), 'Dehongli Treftadaeth y Cymry' (Interpreting Welsh Heritage) as well as a range of attractive Welsh language and literature modules (see Part 2 modules).

In your final year you will spend a third of your time presenting a 'Prosiect Hir' (Extended Project) on a specific area within the new degree, under the supervision of Welsh Department experts. By now you should be ready to take your place confidently in the workplace, as a researcher in business, or a public institution, in the media, in the field of translating or perhaps in Higher Education.
