Dr Huw Meirion Edwards

Dr. Edwards’ PhD focused on a study of popular and continental elements in the poetry of Dafydd ap Gwilym and his contemporaries. His research was published in  Dafydd ap Gwilym: Influences and Analogues (OUP, 1996). Since then he has researched extensively into medieval Welsh Poetry, focusing mainly on the works of Dafydd ap Gwilym and on fourteenth century satirical poems. He has published two books in the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies’ ‘Beirdd yr Uchelwyr’ series:   Gwaith Prydydd Breuan a Cherddi Dychan Eraill o Lyfr Coch Hergest (2000), and Gwaith Madog Dwygraig  (2006) which includes edited versions of poems by one of the most important Welsh satirical poets.

Dr Edwards is one of the Dafydd ap Gwilym.net website editors, a website which includes a new electronic edition of all the poet’s works. Cerddi Dafydd ap Gwilym, based on the website, will be published in 2010. He is also a member of the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies’ editorial board for its seventh project: The Poetry of Guto’r Glyn.

Other research interests include early free verse, classical and popular literature of the eighteenth century and Victorian poetry. He has also a keen interest in recent Welsh poetry. He is one of the course tutors for the Department’s Creative Writing module and his own poetry, mainly in the strict metres, is published regularly.
