What do you remember most about your time at Aber?
I had a fantastic time at Aber and made some really good, lifelong friends. I spent a couple of years living in Pantycelyn hall and have some great memories of the social events organised. I also have some fond memories of spending many hours at the Castle Theatre, rehearsing and performing. I felt at home at Aber and particularly loved the setting, the beaches, the nightlife and the cafe culture.
What are you doing now career-wise and how has your Aberystwyth Degree helped?
Since graduating I’ve held a range of roles in television and, over the past few years, have focussed on developing a career as a TV presenter. I’ve been fortunate enough to work on a wide variety of programmes in both Welsh and English and for a variety of audiences – from kids to cultural programmes. I’m currently one of the presenters of the weekday BBC television show The One Show, a role which I enjoy immensely. My degree provided me with an excellent grounding in the world of television and the confidence to be able to stand up and present. The strong social element of student life at Aber has equally contributed to the development of my career, I depend on my social skills daily as I chat and meet people as part of the show. The University, and life at Aber, has undoubtedly greatly contributed to the development and advancement of my career - providing the academic framework, the opportunities and support as a foundation for future development.
What advice would you have for a student doing your course now?
Be clear about what you want to achieve. I’ve always had my sights set on developing a career in television and have been careful in developing networks and contacts within the industry. Make the most of all the opportunities available whilst studying - academic, extra-curricular and social activities all add value to a degree and ensure that you have the best start for your career.; Above all, work hard, play hard and have confidence in yourself.
