Founders' Day

Aberystwyth University alumni based in London joined Honorary Fellow and Alumna Baroness Kay Andrews, Vice-Chancellor Professor April McMahon and Louise Jagger, Director of the Development and Alumni Relations Office for the inaugural Founders’ Celebration and Giving Circle on Friday 27 November.

143 years ago, on 27 November 1872, London-based Welsh benefactors and supporters of the fledgling university marked the opening of the college in Aberystwyth with “great cheerfulness and hopefulness for the future success of the College” (The College by the Sea, Ewan Morgan p16) and it was no different this time.

At a sold out event on the Grand Staircase of the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel all gathered and did indeed celebrate with great cheer and hope for Aberystwyth University’s future.

Aber in New York and DC

Wonderful receptions for Aber alumni and friends in New York and Washington DC this week.

Aber in Toronto

On 31 March 2014 Prof Gary Rawnsley (Public Diplomacy and Director of International Strategy) hosted an alumni reception in Toronto at Quinn's Bar in the Sheraton. A very enjoyable evening was made even better by the presence of the delightful Stan Hughes CM, (Botany 1941), who even brought a photo of the Llanelli Aber students of 1939 outside Old Coll - complete with sospan fach!

Aber goes to Germany

On 27th November 2013, in festive Cologne, Aber alumni were invited to a reception hosted by Samantha Windows (Postgraduate Recruitment and Marketing).  With an excellent turn-out of graduates (ranging from the early 1970s to 2013) there was reminiscing and laughter all around.  There was also the opportunity to hear about the developments of Aberystwyth University and discuss our latest plans.

Alumni Reception in Shanghai, November 2013

A buffet dinner organised for our alumni and friends in Shanghai at the beginning of November 2013 was a resounding success.  Hosted by Gary Rawnsley (Professor of Public Diplomacy) and Ula Wang (International Officer), attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch and took advantage of the opportunity to hear about the University’s latest plans.

Comedy Works on the Thames, November 2013

Bringing a bit of Aber to central London, Comedy Works on the Thames returned for a third outing on Wednesday night (13th November) aboard the Tattershall Castle, a refurbished paddle steamer permanently moored opposite the London Eye. Around 100 alumni enjoyed a fantastic night from four of the UKs rising stand up stars. University Events Officer Steve Pickup said "It is great to see such strong support for this – it is a hugely fun event to be part of and an ideal opportunity for our alumni in London to catch up and have a few laughs together".

Comedy Works on the Thames will return in 2014 and the alumni team are also working plans to host the first ever Comedy Works in Cardiff – watch this space for more details!

Visit by Paul Davies

Aberystwyth alumnus and partner at PwC, Paul Davies (pictured with Professor Nicholas Perdikis), returned to the University's School of Management and Business (SMB) on 8th October 2013 to deliver a lecture to undergraduate and MSc students. He also met with members of staff and was taken on a tour of the new facilities on the recently refurbished Llanbadarn campus.

SMB Director Professor Steve McGuire said "the School was delighted to welcome back one of our alumni.  Paul spoke on a topic of current interest – taxation and the responsibilities of firms – and students came away with valuable insights into this complex area."

Alumni Reception in Dubai

Thank you to all the alumni who attended our recent reception in Dubai.

Murtza Ali Ghaznavi, Aber Uni International Officer says “The event at the Calabar, The Address Downtown Dubai was a resounding success. Though the live jazz band were exquisite, we opted to sit outside so as to all hear each other speak! Fortunately the normally rigid humidity of Dubai in the summer showed its kinder side and what transpired was a lovely evening on the veranda sofas in the heart of downtown Dubai being overlooked by the world’s tallest building.

Drinks and snacks ensued as an evening that started as awkward introductions turned into a relaxed soiree and then finally, a great night out. Definitely looking forward to remaining in touch with our wonderful alumni and hopefully hosting another such event soon.”

The Bar Kicks Back 2013

On the last weekend of August alumni from far and wide descended in to Aberystwyth for the Bar Kicks Back 2013.  With people ranging in age from their roaring twenties to those approaching their centenary, and hailing from as far east as Canada to as far west as Malaysia this was a truly cosmopolitan crowd.

Old College loomed large throughout the weekend.  The OSA Annual Dinner was once again held in style in the Quad on Friday night, on Saturday morning we re-discovered (nearly) all of its nooks and crannies, whilst the rest of Saturday was dedicated to Old Coll’s future with an exhibition showing some of the proposed plans for its redevelopment.

A particular treat was the Saturday evening journey up the Rheidol valley to Devil’s Bridge on the specially chartered Alumni Express steam train.  The sun shone and the music played to guarantee an enjoyable evening for everyone (even if those in the open carriages returned a bit sootier than when they left).

We also had a very welcome chance to thank our many donors and legators in person and enjoyed an exclusive screening of the acclaimed film Hilter, Stalin and Mr Jones.

“…the best Aber reunion that I have attended. So many friends from my past, a most interesting programme and the trip to Devil’s Bridge was really excellent…”

“a splendid Bar Kicks Back Reunion … such a marvellous programme for us all!”
