The Annual Fund Projects 2011/12

Here is the PDF version of The Annual Fund Brochure 2011-12.

Your gift to the 2011-12 Annual Fund will help ensure that this generation of Aber students is able to benefit from all that an Aber education has to offer: by providing more postgraduate scholarships that enable students to undertake research into today’s problems and challenges; by encouraging entrepreneurship and new career possibilities; by providing grants to student sports societies for new equipment and facilities; and by providing Hardship Funds to help students overcome unexpected financial difficulties.

Student Sports Project: Portable floodlights

Aber has a large and growing array of sports societies, ranging from Rugby to Dodgeball, Ultimate Frisbee to Clay Pigeon Shooting. It is part of what makes the Aber student experience so distinctive. The sports field is where many Aber alumni made lifelong friends and developed skills and qualities which have had a positive impact on their lives. Your support this year can help Aber students make the most of extra-curricular sports, by funding a set of portable, easily maintained floodlights. These will ensure that evening training can continue during the winter months.

 Entrepreneurial Competition: Inventerprize

Working with the University’s Commercialisation & Consultancy Service, the Inventerprize competition is a real and practical opportunity for students to work on genuinely entrepreneurial ideas and see them come to fruition. Students will be encouraged to enter Inventerprize with inventions, business start-up ideas and other ambitious plans. Shortlisted finalists will all receive advice from a panel of successful entrepreneurial alumni. The winner will have his or her idea protected through a full patent/IP registration, receive one-to-one advice from an alumni mentor on its development, and the Annual Fund will also pay for the development of the idea to the prototype stage. Your support for this project will truly encourage creativity and entrepreneurship across the whole student body.

Student Hardship Fund

Aber and its alumni have always supported the belief that financial circumstances should not prevent talented students from benefitting from an Aber education. The Student Hardship Fund is universally available to all registered students of the University. The Fund is administered by the Student Support Service and makes both grants and loans available to students in genuine financial need through unexpected problems. Your support creates a lifeline for some students to complete their studies or to tide them over during times of crisis.

Law Department postgraduate scholarships

The Department of Law and Criminology is dedicated to innovative, high quality teaching and rigorous research activity, for which it is internationally renowned. As part of its plan to enhance its provision of degree courses, the Department is reintroducing its prestigious taught LLM Masters programme, which has only been available by distance learning in recent years. Students will combine seminars and tutorials with leading academics, with independent study and research, which will help develop the skills and practical knowledge they need for successful careers or further postgraduate study. This year, with your support, the Annual Fund aims to offer five £5,000 scholarships to enable more students to benefit from this degree programme.

PhD Studentship in Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science is home to groundbreaking discoveries and bold ideas: 70% of its research is rated as world leading or internationally excellent. In-depth postgraduate study means that students can contribute even more original and significant research. With your support, the Annual Fund PhD Studentship will this year be awarded within the Department of Computer Science in the field of Fuzzy Logic - the core of modern intelligent decision-making systems.
