Biography
The son of a real engineer (Ports and Harbours), I studied Agricultural Sciences for my first degree, then spent many years as a research agronomist and plant physiologist. Computing became an inevitable part of my work. Rather like the one-eyed man in the kingdom of the blind, a little expertise went a long way, and I became the one to whom IT problems were taken. Flattered by this hitherto unimaginable acclaim, I pursued an MSc in Software Engineering and, after one or two consultancies, gained the present post. Fond recollections of Meccano make me sometimes wonder whether real, rather than virtual, engineering might have had its appeal....
I enjoy a number of outdoor activities, such as walking, cycling and "managing our estate" (a euphemism for two acres of hillside populated by unruly sheep and decidedly free-range chickens). I love music, mostly classical but sometimes the less formal music of my youth (Deep Purple etc.). Mercifully for those around me, I listen more often than I play. I am fascinated by my three small children, and a little jealous, as they can get away with playing with Meccano (see above).
