Postgraduate Research Facilities

The Department of English and Creative Writing is located in the Hugh Owen Building, which also houses the main university library, the Hugh Owen Library. Research resources here are extensive and well supported by a wide range of electronic information technology, research and database aids. In addition to these resources, we have access to the National Library of Wales, a copyright library - which is just a five minute walk away.

Word processing and other computer facilities within the university are excellent with numerous workstation rooms, including graphics, scanning and printing facilities.

The University organises its own Postgraduate Research Training Course, which introduces students to most of the major resources and provides training in the use of computer technology and its application to individual research projects. All first-year research postgraduates are required to attend the course and produce coursework, except where evidence of previous postgraduate training is provided.

The course is modularised and compulsory modules include skills training in academic writing and thesis production, as well as those covering general issues such as copyright laws. The modules encourage discussion between students and offer an excellent opportunity for them to integrate into the wider postgraduate community. Further details about the modules - and about many aspects of postgraduate life in Aberystwyth - are available from the Office of Postgraduate Studies.
