Teaching Areas
Katherine is a poet and fiction writer. She teaches creative writing modules across the undergraduate program and the MA in Creative Writing. She also supervises BA and MA dissertations and PhD work.
Research
Katherine’s PhD in Creative Writing, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, was a fictional exploration of changes in Cornish coastal communities when tourism replaced fishing as the main industry, focusing on the experience women workers. Her research interests, creatively and critically, include historical fiction, Cornish maritime history, the work of Daphne du Maurier, and the role of mermaids in constructions of femininity.
Additional Interests
She is a member of the editorial board of New Welsh Review and in the near future will be overseeing a forum for the magazine’s subscribers, aimed at providing a platform for new writers. She has also acted as a peer-reviewer for the Welsh Books Council.
Staff Publications
Katherine’s poems have appeared in New Welsh Review, Poetry Wales and anthologies from Cinnamon Press and Leaf Books. A poem is forthcoming in Poetry Cornwall. She was long-listed in a Cinnamon Press first collection competition, a runner-up in the inaugural New Welsh Review Poetry Prize, and is the winner of the 2011 Leaf Books Poetry Prize. Anthology publication of this poem is forthcoming and there will also be an article on the poem in an upcoming edition of Leaf Writers’ Magazine. Her reviews of contemporary fiction and poetry have appeared in New Welsh Review and Planet, and a review is forthcoming in Poetry Wales.
