Andrew Rayment

Andrew completed a PhD in English Literature in the Department of English and Creative Writing in Aberystwyth University in 2012.

“Between 2010-2012, while still a PhD student at Aberystwyth University, using the material that I was developing through my research, I published my first articles in international journals (including The International Journal of Žižek Studies), and, since completing the PhD, I have gone on to publish my first book, Fantasy, Politics, Postmodernity: Pratchett, Pullman, Miéville and Stories of the Eye (Rodopi, 2014), which was directly based on my PhD thesis. Since gaining an Associate Professorship at a National University in Japan, I have continued to publish articles based on research originating from the PhD, including a chapter in Jacob Held's Pratchett and Philosophy (Palgrave, 2014).

I chose to study at Aberystwyth University because I hoped it would offer an opportunity to study in a superb intellectual, cultural and natural environment. I was not disappointed. In the Department of English and Creative Writing, I received tuition and support that was second to none, while, with the National Library of Wales next-door to the university, I found a huge number of resources at hand. Aberystwyth itself, moreover, is not only a charming place, wonderful for doing research, but also a cultural centre of rare vibrancy and diversity.”
