Summary Course Outline

First Year – a total of 120 credits, to include:

• Encountering Texts (20 credits)
• American Literature and Culture (20 credits)
• American History: The Making of the American Nation 1783-2000 (20 credits)

plus
Further modules to a total of 60 credits chosen from the other Level One modules taught in the department (i.e. English Literature modules, Classics modules), or cognate modules offered by other departments.

Second Year – a total of 120 credits, to include:

• USA Since 1945: Cold War to Civil Rights (20 credits)
• Two options from the approved list
• Modules in the USA on the Exchange semester (60 credits)

Third Year – a total of 120 credits, to include:

• USA Since 1968: From Vietnam to 9/11 (30 credits)
• The Dissertation (30 credits)

• Two options (30 credits each)

or

• Three options (20 credits each
