Classical Studies Modules - Part 1
The Department of English and Creative Writing offers two modules in Classical Studies during Part 1.
Semester 1: CL10120 (20 credits)
Greek and Roman Epic and Drama
This level one module, which requires no previous knowledge of Classics, provides a valuable supplement to the literature modules studied within the English Department. The ‘epic’ element of the course covers Homer and Virgil. The ‘drama’ element covers a selection of plays from the Attic drama of the 5th century B.C., with a particular emphasis on gender and society, as well as Greek New Comedy and Plautus.
Semester 2: CL10320 (20 credits)
The Classical Tradition: A History of Greek and Roman Ideas
Of particular interest to students of English, this module consists of an introduction to Greek and Roman ideas, mythology and literary genres, with particular emphasis on those areas of the Classical tradition which became important to English Literature. A previous knowledge of the Classics is not required. There will be two lectures a week for each module and regular seminars. Assessment is by one assessed essay (20%), seminar work (5%), and one 3 hour exam paper (75%).
