Summary Course Outline

First Year – a total of 120 credits, to include:

  • Encountering Texts (20 credits)
  • Rewritings, Re-visioning Texts (20 credits)
  • Ancestral Voices (20 credits)

plus

  • modules to a total of 60 credits chosen from the other Level One modules taught in the department (i.e. Contemporary Writing, American Literature and Culture, Greek and Roman Epic and Drama, Greek and Roman Ideas), or cognate modules offered by other departments.


Second Year – a total of 120 credits, to include:

  • Medieval and Renaissance Literature (20 credits)
  • Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Writing (20 credits)
  • Romantic and Nineteenth-Century Writing (20 credits)
  • Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Writing (20 credits)
  • Reading Theory / Reading Text 1 (20 credits)

plus either

  • One option (20 credits)

or

  • You may elect to take a 20 credit module from another department in place of an English module


Third Year – a total of 120 credits, to include:

  • The Dissertation (30 credits)
  • Reading Theory / Reading Text 2 (30 credits)

plus

  • Two options (30 credits each)
