German

German at Aberystwyth is taught within the Department of European Languages. Many, but not all, of our students study another language within the Department in addition to German. There is a vast range of subjects from outside the Department that can be combined with German: Education, European Studies, Geography, History, Marketing, International Politics, Mathematics, and Welsh are amongst them. We remain convinced that it is beneficial to students to study German within a broader European context, not least because of the pivotal role played by German culture in the formation of Modern Europe. The aims of the courses that are offered are:

  1. To help students attain a high degree of oral and written proficiency in the German language. This is achieved no only through our language courses, but also, less formally, through the student-organised Deutscher Verein, which runs, amongst other things, a regular Stammtisch where students can meet up for German conversation
  2. To give students a broad understanding of German cultural and political life. We offer a wide variety of courses in literature, linguistics, culture, politics, and history (broadly interpreted). The proximity of expertise in German history within the Department of History means that those whose interests lie in that direction can take complementary modules in an adjacent department, or take the SH degree in Modern German Studies which includes modules from both Departments
