Standing Orders of the Council

Membership of the Council

  1. A record of all members for the time being of the Council shall be kept by the Registrar and Secretary.
  2. The periods during which members of the Council shall hold office shall be as follows - Statute 15(2):
    1. Ex-officio members: so long as they hold offices by virtue of which they became members.
    2. Representative members: until they cease to be members of the body by which they were appointed or until the end of the third year following their appointment or until such date as may in each case be determined by the appointing body, whichever shall be the earliest.
    3. Members appointed by the Court: until the end of the third year following their appointment, or until such earlier date as may in each case be determined by the Court.
    4. Members appointed by the Senate: so long as they are members of the Senate. They shall hold office until the end of the second year following their appointment or such earlier date as may in each case be determined by the Senate to effect rotation.
    5. Members elected by and from the non-academic staff: for three years from 1 September following their election or until they cease to be members of the constituency that elected them, whichever be the earlier - Administrative Regulation: ‘Council - Election of Non-Academic Staff Members'
    6. Co-opted members: until the end of the third year following their co-option or until such earlier date as may in each case be determined by the Council.
  3. Eligibility for re-appointment or re-election shall be as follows - Statute 15(3), Statute 26(2):

    A member appointed by the Court shall, upon completion of his/her terms of membership, and subject to the provisions of Ordinance 13, be eligible for re-appointment unless he/she shall have resigned or been removed from membership.

    A member elected by the Senate shall upon completion of membership be eligible for re-election for a further term not exceeding two years and shall upon completion of any such further term of membership or upon resignation not be eligible for re-election by the Senate until one year has elapsed.

    A member elected by the non-academic staff shall be eligible for re-election for not more than three further terms of office - Administrative Regulation: 'Council - Election of Non-Academic Staff Members'.
