Ordinance 16
SENATE - ELECTION OF MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC STAFF
- The Academic Staff of the University, as defined in Statute 1 and by resolution of Senate or by Regulation, shall be entitled to elect members of Senate, for a term of three years, in accordance with the following arrangements.

Appointments shall be made by and from members of the above constituencies. During the month of March in the year in which the term of office expires, a notice of election shall be issued to all members of a constituency and nominations shall be invited by a specified time, and not later than 1 May.
- 2.3
- Each nomination, to be valid, shall be proposed and seconded by members of the constituency concerned and shall signify in writing the consent of the nominee.
- 2.4
If the number of nominations exceeds the number of places allocated to a constituency an election shall be held by ballot of all its members. The election shall be conducted by the Single Transferable Vote method. The ballot shall be completed and the result declared by 15 May.
Terms of Office
- 3.1
The term of office of each member elected as provided above shall commence on the following 1 September.
- 3.2
A casual vacancy shall be filled for the remainder of the term of office of the member vacating his or her place.
Scrutineers
The Senate shall each year appoint two scrutineers from among its Ex Officio Members for the election of members as prescribed above.
Resolution of doubt
Except as provided in the foregoing paragraphs any matters relating to the membership of constituencies and the conduct of elections shall be determined by resolution of the Senate.
Ordinance 17
THE ORGANISATION OF STUDENTS
The Aberystwyth Guild of Students shall be “The Students' Organisation” as defined in the Charter and Statutes.
The election of Student members of the Council, as provided in Statute 5(1)B and of the Senate, as provided in Ordinance 14, shall be made by the Aberystwyth Guild of Students subject to the following terms and conditions:
- 2.1
Student members shall be either sabbatical officers of the Aberystwyth Guild of Students or full-time registered students of the institution.
- 2.2
Student members shall be appointed for a term of one year, and may be eligible for re- election for not more than one further year as either a Sabbatical Officer or as a full-time Student Representative on Council or Senate.
- 2.3
The terms and procedures for the appointment of Student members of the Council and Senate shall, subject to 2.1 and 2.2 above, be as set out in the Constitution of the Guild of Students which is subject to the approval of the Council on the recommendation of Senate, in accordance with Statute 8.

ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS
Establishment
- 1.1
The Departments established at the university shall be the following unless and until additions or deletions or changes of name are made:
- School of Art
- School of Education and Lifelong Learning
- Department of English and Creative Writing
- Department of European Languages
- Department of History and Welsh History
- Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies
- Department of Welsh
- Department of Information Studies
- Department of International Politics
- Department of Law and Criminology
- Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences
- School of Management and Business
- Department of Computer Science
- Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences
- Institute of Mathematics and Physics
- Department of Psychology
- Department of Sport and Exercise Science
The Council may, in consultation with the Senate, add new Departments, change the names of Departments, or abolish Departments.
Composition
- 2.1
Departments shall include such members of the Academic Staff and such other members of Staff as shall from time to time be assigned to them by the Council on the advice of the Senate.
- 2.2
In accordance with Statute 7 there shall for each Department be a Head of Department. (See Ordinance 19).
- 2.3
For each Department there shall also be a Departmental Board, the constitution of which shall be set out in Regulations.
Powers and Functions
- 3.1
- Responsibility for the conduct of a Department is vested in the Head of Department, who is accountable to the Council.
- 3.2
- Academic Departments are established under the Charter and Statutes to facilitate the organisation of the academic work of the institution, and their functions, powers and responsibilities shall be such as are assigned to them by Senate or Council in the exercise of their authority under the Charter and Statutes.
